On Monday April 23rd, Wyoming Fire-EMS Chief Robert Rielage attended a meeting hosted by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security in Indianapolis regarding the need for legislation in light of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse last August. Indiana’s Governor Daniels and several key state legislators attended along with stakeholders that included representatives of the entertainment industry ranging from major motion picture studios to established acts including the promoter for Bono as well as fire and building code experts. Governor Daniels and the legislators are considering adopting the United Kingdom’s “Event Safety Guide” and ‘Americanize’ it to reference US codes and standards rather than pass new stand-alone legislation. Also present were experts from the United Kingdom who presented the concept of their Event Safety Guide that has been successful for 16 years without a death at a public entertainment venue. The Guide can be viewed at http://www.hse.gov.uk/event-safety/index.htm .
