False Calls at Wyoming Middle School

On Wednesday, March 27th, two malicious false calls were made in quick succession for a reported gas leak at the Middle School and a structure fire at the High School. While the calls were made to the Communications Center from two different cell phones, the location of the bogus caller was traced to the same cell tower, but the location could not be further pinpointed.

Also during the week, Wyoming Fire – EMS assisted three communities at structure fires: at Formica in Evendale; the General Tool Company in Reading and at a four family apartment building in Springfield Township.

Wyoming Fire-EMS Attends ‘Community Paramedicine’ Meeting at UC

On Wednesday, March 27th, both Paramedic Wendy Walters and Chief Rielage represented WyomingFire – EMS at a meeting discussing ‘Community Paramedicine’ hosted by the University of Cincinnati. Over 50 state and local agencies from southwest and central Ohio as well as northern Kentucky took part. The object of the discussions was to prepare both public and private EMS and hospitals for the changing environment of pre-hospital care taking place with the advent of the Affordable Health Care Act in January, and to address the problem of those patients that frequently abuse the 911 system. Among the ideas discussed was the use of fire-based nurse practitioners or physician assistants either at fire station clinics or in mobile vehicles to make routine health visits. One of the stated goals was also to assist an aging population continue to care for themselves or their family in a home setting. Following the meeting, Paramedic Walters was interviewed by Local 12 reporter Jeff Hirsch and the story appeared on the evening news.

On March 3rd, 2013 Wyoming’s Alcohol Task Force presented a seminar entitled ”Underage Drinking–A look at Peer Pressure and Emergency Responses”. The presentation was given by Wyoming Fire-EMS Paramedic, Dr. Susan Eppley and Tri-Health’s Krista Jones. The segment was moderated by Chief Robert Rielage. Wyoming Honored with 2013 Syrian Shrine Firefighters Award for Heroism

On Wednesday evening, Wyoming Fire–EMS was one of four departments honored with the 2013 Syrian Shrine Firefighters Award for Heroism. The ceremony was held in the atrium of the Cincinnati Shriners Burns Hospital. Wyoming, Lockland, Reading, and Woodlawn all received this award for their actions on October 5, 2012 at a fire in a 16-family apartment
complex at 500 Williams Street in Lockland. Their combined actions saved several lives at this fire where three people jumped from upper levels, seriously injuring one person. More importantly, this departure to honor all of the initial responding fire units highlights the collaborative efforts in Hamilton County, and the daily reliance of most jurisdictions on fire personnel and apparatus from their neighbors to automatically and seamlessly respond to their structure fires. The award was accepted by Chief Rielage on behalf of the department.

Wyoming Fire-EMS in Action

On Tuesday February 12th, Wyoming Fire–EMS responded to two incidents. The first occurred at 2:00 a.m. at a single-family residence on Harriet Street near Cooper Avenue in Lockland. Floor joists were found to be smoldering due to a wiring/electrical issue. The family of five was temporarily displaced and was assisted by the Red Cross. Responding units were on scene for approximately an hour and 45 minutes.

Later that evening, Wyoming units responded to the Gold Kist Distributers on Glendale-Milford at Chester Road along with crews from Woodlawn, Lockland, Springdale, Forest Park, Evendale, Lincoln Heights, and Reading. This building was formerly the Roadway Truck Terminal and now houses several businesses. The fire began about 5:45 p.m. apparently when workers using an acetylene torch caught foam insulation on fire. The fire spread between the walls and up to the roof. Most of the crews remained on the scene past 9:00 p.m.

Ladder 97 in Action

The versatility of Wyoming’s Ladder 97 was shown at two fires this past week. The first occurred Sunday evening at a chimney fire on West Hill Lane. While the apparatus remained on the street, the aerial provided a vantage to safely monitor the fire conditions in the chimney as firefighters extinguished the fire from the apartments below.

Then, in the early hours of Thursday morning, Ladder 97 assisted Lockland, Woodlawn, and Forest Park Fire Departments with a rapidly spreading fire at a recycling business in Lockland. Due to the heavy fire load and close proximity to the recycling building, Wyoming’s ladder pipe was utilized to deliver the high volume of water needed to help extinguish and limit the spread of the fire allowing the company to return to recycling production by Friday. Five Wyoming Fire–EMS members stayed on the scene for approximately four hours, while Lockland, Woodlawn, and Lincoln Heights crews overhauled the debris well into Thursday afternoon, almost twelve hours later.

Last Week at Wyoming Fire-EMS…

On Monday January 7th, a grease fire on the oven caused estimated $500 damage to the Bilog Café on Springfield Pike. The fire was quickly extinguished but Wyoming crews remained on scene for nearly an hour clearing the building of smoke.

On Wednesday afternoon of January 9th, Wyoming Fire–EMS units responded to the rear playground of Elm Elementary School to free a 9 year old whose foot slipped between a fence and the playground equipment. The girl was safely removed with no injuries. After being checked by medics, she returned home with her parents.

Apartment Building Fire in Lockland

At 4:17 p.m. on Thursday, a structure fire was dispatched for 600 Stewart Avenue in Lockland. Wyoming Squad 97 and Ladder 97 were on this initial dispatch along with units from Woodlawn, Lincoln Heights, Forest Park, and Evendale. Heavy smoke from the fire in apartment number 17 blocked seven of the residents who had to be rescued by firefighters via ladders. Wyoming Rescue 97 was special called for its air cascade system, scene lights, and additional firefighters approximately 30 minutes into the fire. A total of 16 Wyoming firefighters assisted at the scene. All eleven families displaced by the fire were assisted by Red Cross for alternative emergency housing.
